What is Spiritual Guidance?
What is Spiritual Guidance?
Spiritual Guidance (also known as Spiritual
Direction or Spiritual Companioning) is the
practice of being with another as they
journey their unique spiritual path. It is the
opportunity for making sense of one’s story,
a chance to pause in order to listen for
(and listen to) Wisdom, and the occasion
to wonder aloud about spiritual matters.
Why Spiritual Guidance?
Reasons for engaging with a Spiritual
Guide vary. Sometimes we are processing
specific questions or desire a place to
consider how and where the Divine is
active in our lives. At other times, we are
seeking spiritual support or engaging in
Spiritual Guidance as a form of self-care.
Spiritual Guides are not advice givers or rules enforcers.
What do Spiritual Guides Do?
Spiritual Guides listen carefully – to what is said and to what is unsaid – noticing recurring themes, what brings energy to the person they are listening to and what appears to drain them of energy. Guides
respond to the stories being told with open-ended questions, noticings, encouragements, and the like. Sometimes Guides will offer up additional resources for the person’s further exploration if those resources are welcomed and/or asked for.
